FOLLOWING JESUS
Jesus called only men to be his disciples. But there
were both men and women who were his followers.
We have few individual stories of the men in
Mark’s gospel. There are more stories about women.
These stories suggest what it means to be a follower.
Today it is the story of two nameless women; a mother
and daughter. She is known only as the mother-in-law
of Peter and is a model of Christian service for
both disciples and followers. Her story introduces a
common theme in the ministry of Jesus:
just because you can’t offer a lot doesn’t mean the
little you can offer won’t be helpful.
The most spectacular demonstration of this was
the feeding of the 5000.
WELCOME

BPW 391
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord:
unnumbered blessings, give my spirit voice:
tender to me the promise of his word;
in God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice.

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his name:
make known his might, the deeds his arm has done;
his mercy sure, from age to age the same;
his holy name, the Lord, the Mighty One.

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might:
powers and dominions lay their glory by:
proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight,
the hungry fed, the humble lifted high.

Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word:
firm is his promise, and his mercy sure.
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord
to children’s children and for evermore.

BPW 529
From heaven you came, helpless babe,
entered our world, your glory veiled;
not to be served but to serve,
and give your life that we might live.

This is our God, the Servant King,
he calls us now to follow him,
to bring our lives as a daily offering
of worship to the Servant King.

There in the garden of tears,
my heavy load he chose to bear;
his heart with sorrow was torn,
“Yet not my will but yours,” he said.

Come see his hands and his feet,
the scars that speak of sacrifice,
hands that flung stars into space
to cruel nails surrendered.

So let us learn how to serve,
and in our lives enthrone him;
each others need to prefer,
for it is Christ we’re serving.

THE OFFERING

THE LORD’S PRAYER

BPW 233
When I survey the wondrous cross
where the young Prince of glory died,
my richest gain I count but loss,
and poor contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
save in the death of Christ my God:
all the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to his blood.

See from his head, his hands, his feet,
sorrow and love flow mingled down:
did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
that were an offering far too small,
love so amazing, so divine,
demands my soul, my life, my all.

The Church of Christ in every age
beset by change, but Spirit-led,
must claim and test its heritage
and keep on rising from the dead.

Across the world, across the street,
the victims of injustice cry
for shelter and for bread to eat,
and never live until they die.

Then let the servant Church arise,
a caring Church that longs to be
a partner in Christ’s sacrifice,
and clothed in Christ’s humanity.

For he alone, whose blood was shed,
can cure the fever in our blood,
and teach us how to share our bread
and feed the starving multitude.

We have no mission but to serve
in full obedience to our Lord:
to care for all, without reserve,
and spread his liberating word.

FAREWELL

Order of service 26th February

He comes to us as one unknown;
without a name,
as of old, by the lakeside, he came
to those men who did not know
who he was.
He says the same words,
“Follow me”,
and sets us the tasks which he must
fulfil in our time.
He commands.
And to those who listen to him,
whether wise or unwise, he will reveal
himself in the peace,
the labours, the conflicts and the suffering,
that they may experience
in his fellowship,
and so as a deep mystery they
will learn who he is.

SONG
God is our strength and refuge,
our present help in trouble;
and we therefore will not fear,
though the earth should change!
Though mountains shake and tremble,
though swirling floods are raging,
God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore!

There is a flowing river,
within God’s holy city;
God is in the midst of her-
she shall not be moved!
God’s help is swiftly given,
thrones vanish at his presence-
God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore!

Come, see the works of our maker,
learn of his deeds all-powerful;
wars will cease across the world
when he shatters the spear!
Be still and know your creator,
uplift him in the nations –
God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore!

THE FAITH TO TRUST

SONG
I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin
my hand will save.
I who made the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them
Whom shall I send?

Here I am Lord . Is it I Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of snow and rain,
I have borne my people’s pain.
I have wept for love of them.
They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone,
give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my word to them.
Whom shall I send?

I, the Lord of wind and flame,
I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them.
My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide
till their hearts be satisfied.
I will give my life to them.
Whom shall I send?

CALL TO WORSHIP

BPW 78
This is the time to worship God:
he brings us life.
This is the time to sing his praise:
he brings us joy.
This is the time to pray to him:
he brings us forgiveness and renewal.
This is the time to hear his word:
he brings us guidance and hope.
This is the time to show your love for him:
he brings us love beyond our deserving.

BPW 12
Jesus calls us here to meet him
as, through word and song and prayer,
we affirm God’s promised presence
where his people live and care.
Praise the God who keeps his promise;
praise the Son who calls us friends:
praise the Spirit who, among us,
to our hopes and fears attends.

Jesus calls us to confess him
Word of life and Lord of all,
sharer of our flesh and frailness
saving all who fail or fall.
Tell his holy human story:
tell his tales that all may hear:
tell the world that Christ in glory
came to earth to meet us here.

Jesus calls us to each other:
founding him are no divides.
Race and class and sex and language:
such are barriers he derides.
Join the hands of friend and stranger;
join the hands of age and youth;
join the faithful and the doubter
in their common search for truth.

Jesus calls us to his table
rooted firm in time and space,
where the church in earth and heaven
finds a common meeting place.
Share the bread and wine, his body;
share the love of which we sing;
share the feast for saints and sinners
hosted by our Lord and King.

O changeless Christ, for ever new,
who walked our earthly ways,
still draw our hearts as once you drew
the hearts of other days.

As once you spoke by plain and hill
or taught by shore and sea,
so be today our teacher still,
O Christ of Galilee.

As wind and storm their master heard
and his command fulfilled,
may troubled hearts receive your word,
the tempest-tossed be stilled.

And as of old to all who prayed
your healing hand was shown,
so be your touch upon us laid,
unseen but not unknown.

In broken bread, in wine outpoured,
your new and living way
proclaim to us, O risen Lord,
O Christ of this our day.

O changeless Christ, till life is past
your blessing still be given;
then bring us home, to taste at last
the timeless joys of heaven.

WORDS OF INVITATION

BPW 427
Among us our beloved stands,
and bids us see his nail-pierced hands,
points to his wounded feet and side,
blest emblems of the crucified.

When at his table sits the Lord,
what generous food adorns his board;
when Jesus comes his guests to meet,
the wine how rich, the bread how sweet!

If now with eyes earth-bound and dim,
we see the signs, but see not him,
then may his love the veil displace
and help us see him face to face.

THE STORY OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

BPW 463

Lift up your hearts!
We lift them to the Lord!
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks and praise.
It is not only right, it is our duty and our joy,
at all times and in all places,
to give you thanks and praise, holy Father,
heavenly King, almighty and eternal God,
through Jesus Christ, your only Son, our Lord.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:
Holy! Holy! Holy!
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest!

God our Father, pour out the Holy Spirit
upon your people, that they may have faith,
and upon these gifts of bread and wine,
that they may be for us the body and blood
of our risen and ascended Lord;
may we, eating and drinking in faith,
receive Christ to ourselves again,
for the strengthening of our faith,
the assuring of our hope,
and the deepening of our love.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

BPW 582
Tell all the world of Jesus,
our Saviour, Lord and King;
and let the whole creation
of his salvation sing:
proclaim his glorious greatness
in nature and in grace;
Creator and Redeemer,
the Lord of time and space.

Tell all the world of Jesus,
that everyone may find
the joy of his forgiveness-
true peace of heart and mind:
proclaim his perfect goodness,
his deep, unfailing care;
his love so rich in mercy,
a love beyond compare.

Tell all the world of Jesus,
that everyone may know
of his almighty triumph
defeating every foe:
proclaim his coming glory,
when sin is overthrown,
and he shall reign in splendour-
the King upon his throne!

CALL TO WORSHIP

BPW 1
Angel voices ever singing
round thy throne of light,
angel-harps for ever ringing,
rest not day nor night;
thousands only live to bless thee
and confess thee
Lord of might.

Thou, who art beyond the farthest
mortal eye can scan,
can it be that thou regardest
songs of sinful man?
Can we know that thou art near us
and wilt hear us?
Yes, we can.

Yes, we know that thou rejoicest
o’er each work of thine;
thou didst ears and hands and voices
for thy praise design;
craftsman’s art and music’s measure
for thy pleasure
all combine.

In this house, great God, we offer
of thine own to thee;
and for thine acceptance proffer,
all unworthily,
hearts and minds and hands and voices
in our choicest
psalmody.

Honour, glory, might and merit,
thine shall ever be:
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
blessed Trinity:
of the best that thou hast given,

PRAYER

RESPONSIVE READING
BPW 694 (Psalm 111)

I will thank the Lord with all my heart
in the meeting of the just and their assembly.
Great are the works of the Lord;
to be pondered by all who love them.

Majestic and glorious his work,
his justice stands firm forever.
He makes us remember his wonders.
The Lord is compassion and love.

He gives food to those who fear him;
keeps his covenant ever in mind.
He has shown his might to the people
by giving them the lands of the nations.

His works are justice and truth:
his precepts are all of them sure,
standing firm for ever and ever:
they are made in uprightness and truth.

He has sent deliverance to his people
and established his covenant for ever.
Holy his name, to be feared.

To fear the Lord is the first stage of wisdom;
all who do so prove themselves wise.
His praise shall last for ever!

The Grail

BPW 133

There is no moment of my life,
no place where I may go,
no action which God does not see,
no thought he does not know.

Before I speak, my words are known,
and all that I decide,
to come or go: God knows my choice,
and makes himself my guide.
If I should close my eyes to him,
he comes to give me sight;
if I should go where all is dark,
he makes my darkness light.

He knew my days before all days,
before I came to be;
he keeps me, loves me, in my ways;
no lover such as he.

BPW 59
O for a thousand tongues to sing
my great Redeemer’s praise,
the glories of my God and King,
the triumphs of his grace!
Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
that bids our sorrows cease;
it’s music in the sinners ears,
it’s life and health and peace.

He breaks the power of cancelled sin,
he sets the prisoner free;
his blood can make the foulest clean;
his blood availed for me.

He speaks, and, listening to his voice,
new life the dead receive,
the mournful, broken hearts rejoice,
the humble poor believe.

Hear him, you deaf; his praise, you dumb
your loosened tongues employ;
you blind, behold your Saviour come;
and leap, you lame, for joy.

My gracious master and my God,
assist me to proclaim,
to spread through all the earth abroad,
the honour of your name.
